Session #8 - The Mass (Pt. 2)

 I - Review

    - Maggie Craigg, our speaker last week, gave us an introduction to what the Mass is all about. She mentioned how the Mass is called "Mass" because we as a Church come together to pray as a community and receive Jesus in the Eucharist.

    - The word Mass comes from the Latin "Ite, Missa est," = "Go now, you are sent".

    - The Mass is a CENTRAL part of our Catholic faith. We are expected to attend every Sunday (or Saturday evening), and receive the Body and Blood of Christ = EUCHARIST.

II - One Mass, Different Names

    - The Mass is also known by different names. Here are some of those names:

        * The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass = the one sacrifice of Christ, which completes and surpasses all other sacrifices. We, as a Church unite ourselves with Christ's sacrifice.

        * The Lord's Supper = every celebration of the Eucharist is still the one supper that Christ celebrated with His disciples. The Lord calls us to worship God, as He is present in the Mass.

        * Holy Communion  = because we unite ourselves with Christ in the Holy Mass, and through Him are united with one another. The word Communion comes from the Latin "communio" = fellowship.

III - What are the main parts of the Mass?

    - The Mass is divided into two main parts:

        * The Liturgy of the Word = where we hear the readings from the old and new testament, and also the Gospel. Afterwards, the priest or deacon will share with us a reflection. This reflection is called "homily". This is also a time where we offer prayers for others and ourselves.

        * The Liturgy of the Eucharist = where bread and wine are offered, consecrated = transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, and distributed to the faithful at communion = receiving the Eucharist.

IV - How do we prepare for Mass?

    - Going to Confession regularly.

    - Show reverence: fasting and clothing.

    - Arriving on time.

    - Attitude is EVERYTHING!

    - PARTICIPATE! Use the QR codes in Queen of Angels Church!

V - How do we receive the Eucharist?

    - there is a right way and a wrong way to receive = REVERENCE!

    - after we receive, we want to make sure we spend some time giving thanks (Eucharist means thanksgiving) and reflecting on how we have become one with Christ. "In the Holy Eucharist, we become one with God, like food with the body" - St. Francis de Sales

VI - WHO are we receiving?
